Band Leadership Team for 2021-2022

  • First Drum Major Practice: Thursday, April 22nd – 7:00 A.M.

Instrument Safari: May 13th 5:00-7:00 PM

This is an important event to recruit elementary band and strings students for next year! What we need: 

  • 5-7 students willing to “demonstrate” each group of instruments for elementary school students – Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet and Trombone only. 
  • 10 students to be runners, traffic assisters, sign makers, etc. Also, if anyone is interested in making us a graphic of the safari “map” please let us know!

Symphonic & Jazz Band Placement Auditions for 2021-2022

  • Materials will be posted in Canvas Monday, 4/19. All current students grades 8-11 will complete a basic audition. Students wishing to make Symphonic Band or the Blue Knights Jazz Ensemble will complete a more advanced audition.
  • Audition videos will be due 5/7/2021

Upcoming Events:

  • May 8: UMKC Spring Solo Festival
  • May 10: Final Concert (Concert/Symphonic/Jazz Combo)
  • May 17: Band Banquet
  • May 24: Graduation (all concert/symphonic band students not graduating will perform)

Students: Week-At-A-Glance Information

Practice Videos: All students are expected to complete prescott Videos & Percussion 5-minute drills. We are on Week 8 now, and it’s the last Prescott assignment of the year! Prioritize this during your weekly practice, due 4/25. If you are behind, please come see us for a seminar pass. You are more than welcome to work on those during seminar.

Symphonic Band:

Monday : 

  • Warm-up (Habits book): tone & technique, rhythm, sight-reading
  • Noisy Wheels of Joy, Mystery on Mena Mountain, Molly on the Shore, Infernal Dance
  • Remote Students – Follow along with rehearsal

Wednesday: 

  • Warm-up (Habits): Tone & Technique, TOS scale chorales 
  • Mystery on Mena Mountain, Molly on the Shore, Noisy Wheels of Joy, Infernal Dance
  • Remote Students – Work on Prescott Videos asynchronously 

Friday: 

  • Full Rehearsal of all concert pieces
  • Remote Students – Follow along with rehearsal

Concert Band

Monday : 

  • Warm-up (Habits of A Successful Musician, Chorale Book, Bb Sequence) 
  • Full Rehearsal – Folk Dances, Rites of Tamburo, Romanesque 
  • Remote Students – Follow along with rehearsal

Wednesday: 

  • Warm-up (Habits of A Successful Musician, Chorale Book, Bb Sequence) 
  • Go over rhythm assignment from last week
  • Full Rehearsal – Rehearse Romanesque, Folk Dances 
  • Remote Students – Work on Prescott Videos asynchronously 

Friday: 

  • Full Rehearsal – Warm-up, rehearse Folk Dances, minor scales practice 
  • Remote Students – Follow along with rehearsal, minor scales practice

Blue Notes Jazz Ensemble

  • Tuesday/Thursday/Friday: Preparation for jazz night 2021 (April 30): Big Swing Face, Creole Love Call, Caravan, Gentle Rain
  • Remote students — follow along with rehearsals asynchronously
  • Auditions for initial placement in Blue Knights-Blue Notes are due 5/7. Materials posted in Canvas

Blue Knights Jazz Ensemble

  • Tuesday/Thursday: Preparation for Jazz Night 2021 (April 30): Cheesecake, Spain, C-Jam Blues, Struttin’ With Some BBQ, Tiger of San Pedro
  • Remote students — follow along with rehearsals asynchronously
  • Auditions for initial placement in Blue Knights-Blue Notes are due 5/7. Materials posted in Canvas

Music Theory

  • Tuesday/Thursday: Musical Links Investigation — Presentations. Review Ear Training, Melodic Dictation & Rhythmic Dictation. Begin composition/arranging projects
  • Friday: Ear Training, Dictation, Composition, Adam Neely video
